Money
When coming to Spain, you will quickly become accustomed to using euros compared with dollars.  Throughout the past few years, the European Union has continued to grow, which in turn has allowed them to economically become stronger.  Their grown economic strength is a great thing for Europe, but in turn has caused the dollar to be worth less in comparison to the euro.  The exchange rates fluctuate on a daily basis, but have been 1.5 dollars for 1 euro for the last months (April 2008).  It is important to pay close attention to the exchange rate prior to departing here to Spain if you plan on bringing euros with you.  You can check the rates at the website xe.com.  It is also important to note that the euro is used in the same manner as the dollar in the United States.  This means that at a fast food restaurant, an average meal will cost around 4€.  You can definitely save money wile here in Spain, if you pay attention to the exchange rates, and exchange your travelers checks or American dollars during the times when the exchange rates are in better favor for you.

There are many banks to exchange your money into euros.  If you are living with a host family, it is also a good idea to ask them to exchange your money at their bank, because they will not be charged a commission.  The best place to go to do it yourself is the American Express office located in Plaza Nueva.  Their office is directly in the corner of Plaza Nueva, which is in “El Centro.”  Every Sevillan, especially the bus drivers will be able to help you get to Plaza Nueva which is a heavily populated area with multiple bus stops.

There are also different ways that you will be able use your money here in Sevilla.  First, every business that you will encounter accept the euro/cash.  Many businesses will accept credit cards, but normally have a limit varying from 6€ to 20€ in order to use a credit card.  Also, travelers’ checks can be a good idea to bring due to their safety.  The drawback to travelers’ checks is that due to the different currency only large companies such as hotels and banks are willing to accept them.  They can be transferred into euros at any bank or at the American Express office as well.  It is a good idea to budget out your spending amount before coming here to Spain.  This way, you can split up your money in different forms, whether it be to bring some cash, have a certain amount to use on your credit card, and a designated amount of travelers checks.  If you do this, you will know how much you have to spend and use, and will be able to plan more accordingly.
