Thanks to the work of writer Juan Goytisolo, the Plaza of Marrakech has been listed as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Unesco.

Souks. From the Djemaa el Fna we can access to the labyrinth of the souks. In the souks of Marrakech, wondering disoriented, we can find the latest Moroccan design. From here you'll find best slippers, lamps, candles, bags ... which we find in the north of the country six months later. The streets are wide, and is comfortable stroll among the stalls and shops, while it is true that the best time is the first in the morning to go shopping, because the evening it gets crowded with locals who come to the souk to make their purchases also.

Tanneries. A "must" of any medina, if we want to see how the tanners work cowhide, goat and sheep before it becomes leather handbags or slippers. Despite the bad smell, which will alleviate with a bunch of fresh mint, a walk through the tanneries shows us a profession already forgotten in Europe.

The Koutoubia Mosque or Mosque of the booksellers, is with its tower (the Giralda's sister) one of the symbols of Marrakech. It is not possible to visit it, as only can enter the Muslims, but from the outside is shown in all its splendor, surrounded by beautiful gardens.

In your travels in Marrakech it will surprise you its underground passageways, at the time, served as stables and dungeons. Saadian Tombs. Very near to the palace, is located the mausoleum of the Saadian dynasty, with royal tombs of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, adorned by a beautiful garden. Hidden until the early twentieth century, they are a haven of peace and beauty in the swarm of the medina. Highlights include the Hall of Twelve Columns, which were buried Sultan Mansur and his family.

Menara Gardens. Outside of the city walls, after a long avenue of palms, you arrive at the Menara Gardens. There, the camels are resting in the shade and ,for a small price, you can have a ride. The Menara is a great Islamic garden with a pond, a pavilion and fruit trees. Definitely one of the key destinations for excursions in Marrakech. Its reservoir of water that formerly supplied the city, today used as background scenery for a nightly light and sound, of great beauty.

La ville nouvelle, or Gueliz, is the result of the passage of French in Morocco. Designed by them in the early twentieth century, it is the area of the hotels, cafes, boutiques, restaurants, clubs, etc ... The "modern part" of the city, as  the marrakchies still call it.
