Information about Merzouga Sahara

Information about Merzouga Sahara

Merzouga is a small village located in the south of the Sahara, it is just 50 kilometers from the border with Algeria and is about 30 kilometers from Rissani and about 80 kilometers from Erfoud. It is located south of Morocco in the region of Tafilalet.

It's a place where magic and charm of the Berber world join. Its inhabitants are considered more Bereberes than Moroccan who, although they are Muslims, one wonders why the Quran was not written in Berber.

From any point of Merzouga you will see the dunes of Erg Chebbi, an exciting place of Sahara. This dune field covers an area of 35 square kilometers of golden sand mixed with some other palm, and you can discover the wonders of unimaginable nature and enjoy the sunsets and sunrises on the most beautiful dunes you've ever imagined.

Near Merzouga there are two lakes: the Dayet Srij, which is the largest lake in Merzouga and Yasmina, located a little further north and is smaller. Incredible as it seems these desert lakes generate a surprising and unique fauna. Desert foxes, waterfowl, reptiles and insects, forming an ecosystem worth admiring.

What to do

What to do in Merzouga

Experience sleep in tents (Berber tents) in a Berber camp.

Ride a camel through the desert dunes.

You can ski on the dunes, enjoy the best starry sky at night, rent quads and walk around the field of Erg Chebbi, make a tea from a terrace watching the sunrise or sunset and see how they change the golden hues of the fine desert sand.

You can also learn a bit about the Berber culture and customs that are different from the customs of the rest of Morocco.

Merzouga is a place to relax, meditate and find oneself.
