Information about Larache

Larache is a city in south west of Tanger, that has a important fishing port.

Larache is a antique city founded by the Phoenicians, where the legend stayed, the "Jardin of the Hesperides" where you could find apples of gold guarde by a dragon. From 1911 till 1956 it belonged to spanish protectorate, and the spanish militar called Rafael Valenzuela Urzais died heroically there as well. He was a lieutenant coronel who was at the Panish Legion and participated in the War of the Rif.

It is one of the fiew  places where the majority still speaks spanish.

Lixus reached to the epoch of glory when the emperor Claudio was reining. It was the exporting port of olive oil, salt and garum. The ruins of the garum factory are still there for exploring. They are to be found just 4 km from Larache

The most noteworty is the Castillo of the Cigueñas of Larache, what was constructed by Felipe III in the  XVII.

Plaza of the Liberación, seoarates the modern and the antique part of the city, or the medina of Larache. This is a typical Spanish palace filled with houses bordering the Medina.

Medina of Larache, it is entered from  Bab El Khemis, or fromt he door of market, where it is nice to see the facade of brickes. In the Medina there is the bazaar of dresses and many other shops.

LARACHE MARRUECOS 13.JPGLarache es un lugar donde al parecer cerca de allí, en el valle del río Lucus se encontraba el Jardín de las Hespérides, que erasn las hijas de Atlas y de Hesperis, la diosa de Occidente. Está cerca de la antigua colonia fenicia de Lixus.

Se fundó en el siglo VII para defender la cosata de los piratas, hasta que los portugueses la la ocuparon en el siglo XV.

Posteriormente a España hasta el año 1689 cuando la reconquistaron los marroquíes para continuar con sus aventuras marítimas, hasta que en 1911 la volvió a ocupar España en lo que se conoce como la época del protectorado español que duró hasta el año 1956
