Information about Erfoud

Information about Erfoud

Over 20 miles of the rivers Ziz and Rehren, bringing water from the High Atlas down to the valley, resulting in immense palm trees growing everywhere in the south of Morocco, this region is also known as Tafilalet or "Mesopotamia Maghreb."

Erfoud is located at the foot of the hill of the same name, the Jbel Erfoud, and is one of the most important oases is in North Africa.

The old Sijilmassa, the former capital of Tafilalet, had more than 100,000 inhabitants and over 600 forts. It was enriched over the centuries by the gold that was being caravanned to North Africa and the exploitation of the date palm. Today there is little that remains of that economic splendor, under the archaeological site of the ruins, still, we wonder if there will be any treasures to be discovered in the area.

The town of Erfoud was built during the French protectorate in the early twentieth century, at the foot of Jebel Erfoud, where they established a military base. Today, Erfoud is the starting point for many excursions and expeditions to the first large dunes of the Sahara. From the strong military that dominates the place you can see a spectacular view of the Ziz valley filled with palm trees and crops and at sunset it is beautiful.

What to do

To the north, the imposing Ksar M'Aadid is worth visiting for its incredible views. Visit the black marble quarry. Black marble is hard to find and here it is extracted from a quarry near the desert. You can see how they cut it at Manar Marble.

The Circuit by Palemral Erfoud is 72 km long and takes about 4 hours to do it, if you have a guide and we are happy to arrange one for you.

Or go on an excursion to the dunes of Merzouga, which are only 50 km from Erfoud and where you can see the Erg Chebbi: a large dune field in the Sahara Desert.
